Products and ingredients
What are Frittas chips?
Frittas chips are savoury snacks made from cassava, green plantain and sweet potato, produced in Angola by FREINO – Indústria Agro-Alimentar, Comércio Geral, Lda. Each recipe has only three ingredients.
There are three varieties – Cassava Chips, Plantain Chips and Sweet Potato Chips – in 40 g bags (all varieties), 110 g bags (Cassava and Sweet Potato) and 120 g bags (Plantain).
Where can I buy Frittas chips?
Frittas chips are arriving in shops across Europe. Tell us your country and city and we’ll let you know where to find them: geral@frittas.co.ao.
What are the ingredients?
Each variety has three ingredients. Cassava Chips: cassava, high-oleic sunflower oil and sea salt. Plantain Chips: green plantain, high-oleic sunflower oil and sea salt. Sweet Potato Chips: sweet potato, high-oleic sunflower oil and fleur de sel.
The full ingredient list is printed on every pack in Portuguese, English, French, German and Dutch.
Are the “Banana Chips” sweet? What is the difference between plantain and banana?
No, they are not sweet. Our Plantain Chips (sold as “Banana Chips” on the pack) are made from green plantain, a starchy variety cooked like a vegetable, not from dessert bananas.
That is why they taste savoury and barely sweet: according to the nutrition table on the pack, they contain 0.4 g of sugars per 100 g.
Which oil do you use, and what does “high-oleic” mean?
We use only high-oleic sunflower oil. It comes from sunflower varieties selected for a high content of oleic acid in their fat.
This type of oil is more heat-stable than conventional sunflower oil, which is why it is widely used for frying.
Do Frittas chips contain palm oil?
No. The only oil used in all three recipes is high-oleic sunflower oil, as shown in the ingredient list.
Nutrition and health
What is the Nutri-Score of Frittas chips?
Cassava Chips and Plantain Chips have a Nutri-Score rating of C. The rating for Sweet Potato Chips will be added soon.
Nutri-Score is a five-letter nutrition logo, from A to E, calculated from the composition per 100 g. It is used in several European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain and Switzerland, and has also been adopted by Portugal.
How many calories are in a 40 g bag?
A 40 g bag of Cassava Chips provides about 790 kJ / 189 kcal; a 40 g bag of Plantain Chips provides about 800 kJ / 192 kcal.
Per 100 g, Cassava Chips contain 1974 kJ / 473 kcal, 17 g fat (of which saturates 0.8 g), 77 g carbohydrate (of which sugars 5.6 g), 3.6 g fibre, 1.2 g protein and 0.5 g salt. Plantain Chips contain 2000 kJ / 480 kcal, 23 g fat (of which saturates 1.7 g), 64 g carbohydrate (of which sugars 0.4 g), 6.5 g fibre, 2.1 g protein and 0.7 g salt.
How much salt do they contain?
Cassava Chips contain 0.5 g of salt per 100 g, about 0.2 g per 40 g bag. Plantain Chips contain 0.7 g of salt per 100 g, about 0.28 g per 40 g bag.
Are Frittas chips ultra-processed?
EU food law does not define “ultra-processed food”, so there is no official classification. What we can show is the recipe: the main ingredient (cassava, plantain or sweet potato), high-oleic sunflower oil and salt (sea salt or fleur de sel), all declared on the label.
Our chips are a fried snack. We recommend enjoying them in moderation as part of a varied diet.
Do Frittas chips contain acrylamide?
Like all fried starchy snacks, Frittas chips may contain acrylamide. Acrylamide forms naturally when starchy foods are fried, baked or roasted above about 120 °C; it is found, for example, in bread, coffee, biscuits and vegetable crisps. The EU requires producers to keep it as low as reasonably achievable, and in 2026 the European Commission is reviewing the benchmark levels, including for vegetable crisps.
At Frittas, we control the temperature, frying time and colour of every batch, and we regularly have finished batches tested in a laboratory.
Is cassava safe? Is it true that it contains cyanide?
Yes, cassava is safe once properly processed. Raw cassava naturally contains cyanogenic glycosides, which can release hydrocyanic acid. Peeling, washing, slicing and cooking cassava reduces these compounds. The EU sets maximum levels for hydrocyanic acid of 50 mg/kg for fresh peeled cassava root and 10 mg/kg for cassava flour.
The cassava variety we use and our processing steps result in chips that are safe for human consumption, as shown by laboratory testing of the finished product.
Allergens and diets
Are Frittas chips vegan?
Yes. All three recipes use only plant-based ingredients, and the pack carries the Vegan Food 100% badge.
Are Frittas chips gluten-free?
Yes. The three ingredients in each recipe are naturally gluten-free.
Do Frittas chips contain allergens?
No. Frittas chips contain none of the 14 allergens that must be declared in the EU.
Origin, production and quality
Where are Frittas chips made?
They are made in Viana, Angola, by FREINO – Indústria Agro-Alimentar, Comércio Geral, Lda, at Rua da Sonef, Km 26 – Bairro 30.
Where do the cassava, sweet potato and plantain come from?
They come from Angola. We work with small rural communities and family farmers who grow cassava, sweet potato and plantain.
We travel across several regions of Angola to choose our raw materials:
- Cassava from Uíge province, with tender flesh and a slightly sweet taste;
- Sweet potato from Malanje, Cuanza Norte and Cuanza Sul provinces, with purple skin and sweet yellow flesh;
- Plantain from Bengo province, harvested while still green to make crisp chips.
We season the chips with salt from the salt pans of Benguela, where seawater slowly evaporates in the sun: sea salt for cassava and plantain, fleur de sel for sweet potato.
What does “made by hand” mean?
The main stages of production are done by hand: selecting the raw materials, peeling, frying, sorting the finished product and packing. Slicing is done by machine: a slicer cuts each product to the right thickness.
What food safety checks do you carry out?
FREINO has HACCP in place; certification is planned. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) is the system required by EU food hygiene law.
We control the temperature, time and colour of every batch we fry. After frying, the chips are sorted again by hand and only those that meet our quality standards are packed. We regularly have finished batches tested for acrylamide and, for cassava, hydrocyanic acid.
Storage and labelling
What is the shelf life of Frittas chips?
Frittas chips have a shelf life of 9 months. The best-before date is printed on every pack.
The chips are packed in a protective atmosphere and the bags are heat-sealed.
How should I store Frittas chips?
Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Once opened, close the bag tightly and eat within a few days, while they are still crisp.
Which languages are on the label?
Five: Portuguese, English, French, German and Dutch. The label includes the ingredient list and the nutrition table per 100 g.
